tl;dr Gartner’s Key Priorities for IAM Leaders in 2021

22. Juli 2021 |

In an article worth reading [1], three Gartner senior director analysts analysed how the pandemic will affect home office, remote access and what will follow in the future. Here is a quick summary:

The Machines are Coming

David Mahdi expects the access management market to grow nearly 40% over the next three years to $19 billion. But those who want to lead the market then still have some homework to do. Especially in the IoT environment, machine identities are becoming increasingly important and need to be operated more securely and quickly.

Please Identify Yourself

His colleague Akif Khan looks at the importance of secure identity credentials in the pandemic. Previously common data-centric methods (user provides name, address, date of birth, etc., ID service matches this with stored information) are increasingly being replaced by document-centric ones, where users identify themselves with photo ID and selfie, for example. The sticking point here is: how do you ensure that the user is actually present and identifies themselves?

Protected Privileges

The third member of the group, Michael Kelley, considers privileged account management (PAM). The current drive toward digitisation has also brought attackers onto the scene, who want to profit from the increasing remote activity of administrators. At the same time, more employees, suppliers, and service providers require privileged remote access. Here, a well-thought-out PAM strategy helps facilitate the work of employees and partners while still monitoring and discouraging unauthorised access to privileged accounts.

Three analysts, three perspectives, yet one conclusion: collaboration will be different even after Corona. More digital, more flexible and – hopefully – more secure.
